Tail and Nose Coverage

Liability doesn’t always end when your policy does. And it doesn’t always start fresh with a new one. Claims can arise months or even years after patient care was provided, or they can stem from care delivered before your new policy began. That’s why tail and nose coverage are essential — working together to protect you through every career transition.

Tail and Nose Coverage

What tail coverage covers:

Tail coverage (also known as an extended reporting endorsement) allows you to report claims after your policy has ended, as long as the incident occurred during the time your policy was active.

  • Protects you when retiring or leaving practice
  • Covers claims filed after switching jobs or insurers
  • Safeguards you against post-policy lawsuits

What nose coverage covers:

Nose coverage (also called prior acts coverage) extends your new insurance policy backward, covering incidents that occurred before the start date of your new policy.

  • Protects you when changing carriers
  • Ensures no gaps in liability protection
  • Provides seamless continuity between policies

Why tail and nose coverage matter

Most medical liability policies today are written on a Claims Made basis, which means they only respond if the claim is filed while the policy is active. That creates a gap when you switch insurers or end a policy.

  • Tail coverage allows you to report claims even after your policy has ended, such as when retiring or leaving a practice.
  • Nose coverage extends your new policy backward to cover incidents from your prior practice or insurer.

By contrast, Occurrence policies automatically cover claims tied to incidents during the policy period, no Tail or Nose needed. But since Claims Made coverage is now the standard, Tail and Nose are essential for full protection.

How much do nose and tail and nose coverage cost?

The cost of nose and tail coverage depends on factors such as:

  • Your specialty and risk profile
  • The length of coverage needed
  • Policy limits and insurer guidelines

Tail coverage often requires a one-time premium, while nose coverage is typically built into your new policy. Both are crucial investments in long-term financial security.
